PUBG Mobile was launched worldwide on 19 March 2018.Since then, it has revolutionized the gaming and sports industry as a whole with its tremendous success, becoming one of the torch bearers of mobile sports with multi-million dollar prize pools and world-leading tournaments.
It is currently by far the most successful mobile game, generating almost $2.6 billion in revenue in 2020 according to Sensor Tower's report. It seems, however, that it will develop even more in the coming months.
Reports from Korean media portal MTN as well as popular PUBG data leaker 'PlayerIGN' suggest that game developer Krafton Inc. is working on a sequel to PUBG Mobile.
PUBG Mobile 2.0 for growth
The first updates came from the MTN news platform in Korea. The website reported that PUBG 2.0 and PUBG Mobile 2.0 were under development, of which the mobile version was renamed Project XTRM. It also mentioned that the Krafton team working on the cross-platform sequel to PUBG had been moved to the main PUBG team. The game is currently in production at the moment, and only if it was successfully finished will it be renamed PUBG 2.0.
PUBG Data miner (Twitter handle @PlayerIGN) said there could be a global announcement soon. While he was persuaded that PUBG 2.0 will be a cross-platform title, he now thinks it won't. PUBG Mobile 2.0, if launched, is expected to be more successful than the first title, particularly if it features many enhancements and new maps.
Launching PUBG 2.0
The MTN report reports that the introduction of PUBG 2.0 will be critical for Krafton while the organization discusses the prospect of an IPO. It is not clear when the IPO will happen, but a solid, optimistic response to the PUBG 2.0 launch ahead of the IPO will be a promising sign for the group. So, we should estimate the game to be released either late this year or early next year, based on where it is in the production cycle. The MTN study applies to the late-2022 timeframe for the IPO. It should be remembered, though, that looking at the prospect of an IPO, Krafton does not mean that it will necessarily end up becoming public.
